The Bacho Standard Axe is their classic outdoor hatchet and a perfect entry level outdoor companion, whether you are hiking in the wild or just need to get a fire going.
We wanted to offer a more budget axe for people who are just getting into green woodwork or spoon carving. Ben had one of these when he was a teenager and it served him well on many camping trips and even when he started on his Green woodwork path. These axes used to be called Sandvik axes but now are under the name Bacho (famous now for the Laplander folding saw) but still have the great shape and weight to the head, a perfect size handle for craft work. As these are a more budget axe they have cast heads rather than forged and have an Ash handle instead of Hickory, they also come with a simple rubber edge guard as standard. If you were buying one from anywhere else it will be very blunt when it arrives, we take these axes and refinish them to make them razor sharp, ready to use and perfect for spoon carving.
This combination of handle length to head weight makes it freely able to swing one handed for heavy cuts as well as choking up the axe along the shaft to do some very fine work. It is a great spoon carving tool for sure, also very suited for a small axe that will fit in your pack for an overnight camp when you only have to produce a small amount of wood or kindling for a fire.
All of our Bacho axes have the added bonus of leaving our workshop with a Ben Orford regrind or 'Orford edge' making them razor sharp and ready for action straight out of the box. It comes with a rubber blade cover as standard.
Again not the best axe for any heavy felling but can cope well with a little small felling and removal of branches etc. One thing with a smaller handle is you have to be aware of your body placement so if splitting wood it is safer to kneel next to a chopping block so if the block is missed the axe will not hurt you, due to the small arc of the swing.
This axe has a square poll so can be struck to allow it to be used for cleaving and also used as a hammer for knocking in pegs etc.
The overall size makes it perfect to fit inside your day sack or small shoulder bag.
Head weight 600g
Total weight 860 g
Handle Length 360mm/14.25”
