The Ekelund Hunting Axe is a perfect all round Bushcrafting axe, due to the size of the handle and overall weight, it is big enough to cope well with felling, as well as being small enough to be choked up near the head for craft work. They call this their Hunting Axe due to the slightly rounded poll of the axe that can be used for skinning, but do not think this is all it’s good for, in many ways this is more of a general purpose axe than specifically for hunting. The rounded poll that makes this a hunting axe is shaped in a very good way as all the sharp edges have been removed but there is still sufficient flat on the poll to allow the axe to be used as a hammer for knocking in pegs etc as well as being struck with a wooden mallet when cleaving. On other hunting style axes this has been rounded to the point that you can no longer use the poll in this manner and means you have lost a very valuable asset to the axe itself in our opinion.

The general shape of the head and the convex grind make it a great axe for a wide range of tasks whether it be cutting down trees for making a shelter to splitting wood, the strong convex grind is symmetrical so will allow left and right handed users. The convex grind also is a perfect grind for a sharp resilient edge and is easy to maintain even in the field.

All of our Hultafors axes have the added bonus of leaving our workshop with a Ben Orford regrind making them razor sharp and ready for action straight out of the box at no extra charge.

The premium hickory handle is nicely finished and is big enough the you can even tailor it to your own fit if needed which is a nice option to get the perfect fit for your hand.

As with the other axes it comes ground and sharp with a leather cover too.

The name of this classic hunting axe comes from Gunnar Ekelund, the squire who was inspired after a trip to the USA and initiated axe production at a larger scale in 1870-75.
